Maybe you started off having a puppy and being excited having a little friend, but now that your pup has grown, their behaviors and habits have changed. And maybe those behaviors and habits are making it a nightmare to live with, like having a roommate that eats your shoes and growls on your bed and can’t even go outside without lunging at cars! And maybe you just want to know the why to your dog’s quirks.

You’re in the right place! The why of behavior is where I’ve made my home, with a background in research and the study of human-animal anthropology. Discovering the reasons for your pet’s troubling (or pleasant!) behavior is the first step towards living peacefully and even thriving with a non-human roommate!

Primitive Breeds

Primitives are breeds that are behaviorally similar to wild canids like coyotes and wolves, and are always very ancient historically. These include (most commonly) Siberian Husky, Chow Chow, Akita Inu, Shiba Inu, Samoyed, Alaskan Malamute, Finnish Lapphund, Korean Jindo, Xoloitzquintli, Basenji, Saluki, Afghan Hound, Pharaoh/Ibizan Hound, Podenco, Cirneco dell’Etna, Shar Pei, Pekingese, Lhasa Apso, Tibetan Terrier/Mastiff, and Maltese. If you own any of these, or believe you may have a primitive-type dog, you’re in the right place!

Southern Rescues

North American Pariah dogs (NAPs) are what I have begun to call the Southern rescue dogs that seem to infest training facilities, New England rescues, and many, many new adoptees’ homes. These Southern street dogs have many primitive qualities, and thus are of special interest to me. If you’ve adopted a dog and continually find yourself (and your previous trainers!) at a loss, then you may have an NAP. These dogs also have some specific behaviors of concern that new adopters must know about, but are rarely privy to! They DO require different training then your typical dog, and with my background in primitives I can help you more than other trainers are able to.

Have a regular dog with typical behaviors (with a few interesting quirks, maybe)? Just a regular dog looking for some regular obedience training? Great! I only follow LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) guidelines and am Fear-Free certified. This means I do not use e-collars, prongs, or any other aversive tools to stress out your pup! I believe training any animal is built off of trust, not hierarchy or ‘alpha’ techniques.

Caribbean Rescue

Have a Potcake from Jamaica? Puerto Rico Island Dog? Cunucu from Aruba? These island dogs are a mixture of native, pre-colonial Indigenous dogs, and the colonial invaders’ hounds brought over from Europe. The isolation of developing on an island have made these breeds more unique than others from the mainland, and are very similar to primitive breeds and the Southern Rescues I also specialize in. They have certain behavioral quirks unique to them, and are often quite skittish around people. If you’re looking for an easier way to share your home with one of these island dogs, or are just looking for advice on their hard-to-read behaviors.
